The Effects of High Health Risky Activities including Smoking and Drinking Habits

Abstract
|
|
|
Objective: We explore the wage effects of smoking and drinking patterns between male and female workers.
Methods: Using the Third Korean Working Condition Survey(KWCS, 2011), we investigate a total of 21,737 people of which male workers are 13,524 and female ones are 8213. The factors of smoking behaviors include the indicator variable of being regular smokers, one of occasional smokers, and the experience of former smoking behavior. The factors of drinking behavior include the frequency of drunkeness such as monthly drinking days. Multiple linear regression models are performed to examine the different wage impacts between male and female workers.
Results: The impacts due to different smoking and drinking patterns are quite differently shown between male and female workers, which causes the different wage effects. Our estimated earning results show that the past smoking experience has had a larger positive effect on wage differences, especially for male workers, white occasional smoking is a negative effect on wages. But the intermittent smoking of female workers is a strongly positive effects on wages. Futhermore, the regular smoking and drinking behaviors causes negative effect on wage, roughly 4% lower. In summary, we find that different smoking patterns has different gender effects on wages. Thus, we set up four additional hypotheses indicating different effects of smoking and drinking, for various groups including sporadic smoking groups.
Conclusion: We highly suggest the different smoking control policies for both gender workers, incentive on quitting smoking, and the health promotion and strong smoking control for female smokers and for occasional male smokers.
